How Much Does an
Epoxy Floor Cost?
Honest pricing guidance for Melbourne homeowners and businesses. What to expect, what affects the cost, and how to make sure you’re comparing quotes fairly.
Typical Costs for Melbourne Garages
The price of an epoxy garage floor depends on the size of the space, the condition of the concrete and the system you choose. The figures below are realistic guides for a standard residential garage in Melbourne.
Single Garage
Approx. 20-30 m²- Concrete grinding and prep included
- Full broadcast flake system
- Polyurethane topcoat
- 7-year guarantee
- Complete in 1 day
Price varies with concrete condition. Cracks, moisture issues or previous coatings may affect the final price.
Double Garage
Approx. 40-60 m²- Concrete grinding and prep included
- Full broadcast flake system
- Polyurethane topcoat
- 7-year guarantee
- Complete in 2-4 days
The most common job we do. Prices are very competitive for the quality of product and installation.
Metallic Finish
Any size, premium system- Same concrete prep and base
- Metallic pigment epoxy system
- High-gloss polyurethane topcoat
- 7-year guarantee
- No two floors exactly the same
Premium finish, still significantly more affordable than polished concrete or tiled floors.
Why Quotes Can Vary
If you’ve received quotes that look very different, this is usually why. Understanding what drives the price helps you compare fairly.
Floor Size
The biggest single variable. Larger floors cost more in materials and time, but the per-square-metre price typically comes down on larger jobs.
Concrete Condition
Cracked, contaminated or damp concrete requires more preparation. We test for moisture and assess the surface before quoting. Some installers skip this and factor in surprises later.
System Type
Epoxy flake is the most popular and cost-effective option. Metallic systems use more material and skill. Both include the same surface prep and polyurethane topcoat.
Surface Preparation Method
Proper diamond grinding is essential for adhesion. Shot blasting is faster but less effective on all surfaces. We always grind. Some cheaper operators use acid etching, which fails within a few years.
Number of Coats
A quality epoxy system has a primer coat, broadcast coat, mid coat, and polyurethane topcoat. Single-coat systems cost less upfront but fail faster. Our system is always full thickness.
Warranty Offered
We back every job with a 7-year guarantee. If a company doesn’t offer a written warranty, that tells you something about how confident they are in their product and process.
Pricing Questions We
Get Asked All the Time
Is epoxy cheaper than tiles or polished concrete?
For a garage floor, yes. Epoxy is typically 40-60% less expensive than polished concrete and significantly cheaper than tiling once you factor in grout maintenance. It also installs faster, which reduces labour costs.
Why is your quote higher than another company?
It usually comes down to the preparation method, the number of coats and the product quality. We use commercial-grade epoxy with a full four-coat system and proper diamond grinding. Cheaper quotes often skip a coat, use acid etching instead of grinding, or use lower-grade product. The floor looks the same initially but fails much sooner.
Are there any costs I should expect on top of the quote?
We quote the full job including concrete prep, materials and installation. The only time the price changes is if we find something unexpected when we grind the concrete, such as a moisture issue or existing coating that needs more work to remove. We tell you before we proceed, never after.
How long does the floor last? Is it worth the cost?
A properly installed epoxy floor with a polyurethane topcoat typically lasts 15-20 years in a residential garage. Spread the cost over that period and it works out to less than the cost of repainting your floor every few years. Plus you never have to think about it.
