Reservoir is one of the larger northern suburbs and the housing is predominantly postwar, with substantial numbers of 1950s and 1960s brick and weatherboard homes on generous blocks. Many still have their original detached garage at the end of a long side driveway, and there is a steady flow of renovation and subdivision adding newer garaging alongside.
The original garages here are often more shed than garage, with slabs poured thin, poured without a membrane, and in some cases poured in stages as the structure was extended. Sixty years of use adds oil contamination and surface wear on top of that. The newer garaging on subdivided blocks is the opposite problem, young slabs with power troweled surfaces that need mechanical preparation.
What that means for your Reservoir garage floor
On the older slabs we grind back and assess honestly. A thin or poorly poured slab can still take a coating and hold it, but it needs to be understood first, and where the concrete underneath is not sound we say so rather than coating over a problem. Newer subdivision garaging gets moisture tested and mechanically ground the same as any young slab.

The garage on my Reservoir block is really more of a shed. Can you still do it?
Often yes, though it is worth us looking first. Original garaging on these postwar blocks was sometimes poured thin, sometimes poured in stages as the structure grew, and usually poured without a membrane. None of that automatically rules out a coating, but it does need establishing before we quote rather than after. We grind back and assess honestly, and if the slab underneath is not sound enough to hold a system for seven years we will say so plainly.
